In Memoriam

In August 2025, we lost our dear friend, colleague and ISSE Ambassador, John J. Johnston. This webpage is dedicated to his memory. To read our obituary, please click here.

John’s legacy

John meant so much to so many people and communities. We were lucky to have known John, and to have been able to experience his incomparable knowledge of all things Egyptology, classics, Hammer Horror, theatre and Doctor Who. His friendship and support has left a lasting mark on us for all time, but John also leaves behind a legacy in written word, audio and film that we are able to turn to in times of sadness

At ISSE, we wanted to create this online space, not only to commemorate John and his support of the Society, but to help share his words and knowledge with everyone who ventures onto our site.

The following resources have been collected by the ISSE Committee, by our members, and by John’s friends and colleagues. We hope that you will read his words, watch his videos, and join us in celebrating his life.

Resources are grouped together by theme, and to find videos, please scroll down the page. If you have a suggestion to add to this page, please do share it with us by heading to our contact page. Please note that we link off to external pages.

Vale, dear John.
